Dublin : Croke Park for a Hurling Match
Dave : Croke Park is packed to the gills today. I'm so happy our concierge could get us tickets to the match on short notice.
Scarlett : I have never seen a game so fast-paced in my life! How come hurling hasn't made its way to the U.S. or Canada? It seems like the national pastime here in Ireland.
Dave : Hurling did exist in North America, but it got displaced by football, baseball, and hockey.
Scarlett : That's too bad. It's so much more fast-paced than any of those games. And the fans are bouncing off the walls!
Dave : Here, I bought a small rulebook at the store yesterday so we can get the gist of it.
Scarlett : Well, I can pretty much follow along with the basics. The guys all carry sticks called hurleys and pass a ball called a sliotar. And it's set up like soccer, except with 15 players on each side.
Dave : Right, and they can hit the ball like in field hockey, toss it up and whack it like a baseball, or carry it on their sticks like lacrosse. And they score either in the goal, like soccer, or through the goalposts, like rugby.
Scarlett : Ouch! Did you see those two players almost collide! That was a close shave. Thank god they had helmets on.
Dave : Yeah, but they don't have any other pads. Even the goalie seems unprotected standing there in the line of fire.
Scarlett : It says here that hurling was played in the St. Louis Olympics in 1904, but never again. That's too bad.
Dave : Well, when we get back home we can find a satellite channel to watch our new favorite sport! Go County Clare!!!
