그 상점에 대한 발상은 얼음회사라는 뜻밖의 장소에서 탄생했다. 1927년 그 회사의 얼음창고들 중 한 곳에서 어떤 직원이 우유, 빵, 그리고 달걀을 팔기 시작했다. 비록 가까운 곳에 식료품점들이 있었지만 그 직원은 식재료를 보존하는 얼음의 기능에서 가능성을 봤다. 그는 결국 그 회사를 샀고 사우스랜드 얼음회사에서 사우스랜드 기업으로 명칭을 바꿨다. 그 회사는 대공항으로 인해 파산하기 전까지 계속해서 확장했다.

The concept of the store was born from an unusual place - an ice company. In 1927, an employee began to sell milk, bread, and eggs in one of the company's ice houses. Although grocery stores were nearby, the employee saw potential in the function of ice to preserve food items. He eventually bought the company and renamed it from Southland Ice Company to Southland Corporation. The company continued to expand until the great depression made the company go bankrupt.
