블랙프라이라는 명칭의 출처에 대한 두 개의 이야기가 존재한다. 하나는 그 명칭이 어둠 속에서 기다리는 긴 줄의 쇼핑객들을 묘사한다는 것이다. 많은 상점들은 자정이나 새벽 4시에 문을 연다. 또 다른 이야기는 그 명칭이 소매상들이 이윤을 창출해내는 시점을 지칭한다는 것이다. 전통적으로 회계장부에서 손실은 빨강으로 이윤은 검정으로 표시되었다.

 A couple of stories exist about the origin of the name of Black Friday. one is that the name describes the long lines of shoppers waiting in the dark. Many stores open at midnight or at 4 am. Another story is that the name indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit. Traditionally, losses were marked in red and profits in black in account books.
