You're so out of touch, Doug! It's not a USB stick, it's an e-cigarette. 

Wow, they've really evolved over the past few years. I hardly noticed the smell at all.

Yeah, the new ones don't emit as much of the smell as the old ones and the inserts contain as much nicotine as regular cigarettes.

It sounds like it's defeating the purpose of replacing cigarettes if they're still chock full of chemicals.

Even though I love mine, I agree there are problems. Now the makers of these products are targeting a younger market.

That's taking things too far. Teens should be protected from these kinds of practices.

A: I'm trying to unclutter my house. But I couldn't resist going shopping.

B: That totally defeats the purpose.

* Wearing socks with sandals kind of defeats the purpose.

3. take things too far - to do something excessive or drastic 

A: I heard Rex is shaving his head and getting a tatoo on his neck because Amy broke up with him

B: Now that's taking things too far.

* The boy took things too far when he threw a rock at the window.
