Johannesburg : The Gold Rush

Gordon : Okay, Haley. Why did you bring me to a park named after one of the Beatles?

Haley : Hahaha! That's really funny. But this George Harrison wasn't a Beatles, he was a miner.

Gordon : The Miners? I've never heard of that group. Were they part of the British Invasion of the 60s?

Haley : You are so dense sometimes. Harrison was a gold miner and he sparked the gold rush of 1886 in South Africa on this very spot by staking his claim.

Gordon : That's pretty cool. Did he become super rich and powerful?

Haley : That's the funny thing. He supposedly worked the mine for a while, then gave up and sold his claim for less than 10 pounds.

Gordon : How much gold was there in this area? Did Harrison miss the boat on the riches?

Haley : Well, let me put it this way: the entire nation was turned around and mining because its biggest industry. In fact, it created a whole class of super-wealthy miners referred to as " randloads," nicknamed after this area- Witwatersrand.

Gordon : Wow. It's hard to imagine that the rebirth of a nation can be traced back to this little park. Hey, look at that shiny stone over there. Is that....gold?

Haley : It can't be. I mean, we are at the source, but wasn't it all mined and picked through?

Gordon : Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, Haley. Grab it and let's get out of here!
