National Parks of North America: Hawaii Volcanoes

Cecil : Hey, is that smoke over there? Should we be running for cover?

Janice : I don't think so, but to be on the safe side, let's make an offering to the volcano goddess, Pele. I brought some leis to throw into a crater.

Cecil : Whatever it takes to keep us safe, Janice. Heck, I'll do a hula dance if need be.

Janice : I don't think we'll need to go to extremes, Cecil. Just be respectful of the power of these mountains.

Cecil : Trust me, I am in awe of Mauna Loa and Kilauea. And the view from up here is so impressive that I'm probably going to run out of memory on my camera.

Janice : Did you know Mauna Loa is considered not only the largest shield volcano on earth, but also the largest mountain, too?

Cecil : I thought Mt. Everest was the largest.

Janice : No, it's only the tallest above sea level. Mauna Loa goes far underwater, so it's actually taller and broader than any other mountain.

Cecil : Maybe you should change careers and become a volcanologist. You know this stuff backwards and forwards.

Janice : Nah, I think it might require another four years of college and I'm still paying off my first four years. But I wouldn't mind living in Hawaii.

Cecil : Me too. I wonder how much education it would take to become a tour guide up here. Let's throw our leis in that crater over these and ask Pele for guidance. <laughs>
