Dealing with Smartphone Addiction  스마트폰 중독 대응책

[Power Dialog]

Have you heard of nomophobia? It's turning into a big problem for society.

I heard a little about it. Isn't a combination of the words "no mobile phone phobia?"

Exactly! The article I just read was pretty eye-opening. It said half of American teens admit they are addicted.

Even in a cafe in Korea you hardly see anyone talking face to face with their friends. It's like people lost the ability to really connect with one another.

The younger generation doesn't know what life was like before the Internet and smart devices.

It'll be a rude awakening if they ever have to experience a prolonged blackout!

I think people should learn to go without. Maybe I could start an online movement? How does Wireless Wednesday sound?

[Power Note]

1. eye-opening - causing one to suddenly know or understand something

A: Did you see the documentary about the Kennedy assassination?

b: Yeah, all the new information they included made it really eye-opening.

* Working at the hospital for the summer was an eye-opening experience.

2. face to face - in the presence of another person

마주 보는, 직접적인, 정면으로

A: We've been texting each other for weeks. Can we finally meet this week?

B: You mean face to face? Um, I guess so. But I'm really nervous.

* The criminal and his victim met face to face in court.

3. a rude awakening - a sudden and often shocking realization

예상치 못한 (주로 불쾌한 사실을) 깨달음. (진실이라고 믿었던 내용이 사실이 아니었음을 알았을 때 느끼는) 설망이나 좌절, 충격

A: I can't believe the CEO fired his own son.

B: Yeah, that must have been a rude awakening for Brian.

* It was a rude awakening to open my door and find a meter of snow outside.
